TRAINING SITES:

Please review the PTC guidelines (see the hyperlink titled "Read Our Background, Policies, and Procedures" listed below under NEW TRAINING SITES NOT CURRENTLY PART OF THE PTC as well as the POLICIES section on this website).

These guidelines include a “preferred" application deadline starting in mid-December but final application deadline by 1/6/25 by 5pm and notification day of 2/10/25. Thus, you could have an application deadline of Friday 12/13/24 - before the final application deadline of 1/6/25 - but PTC participating sites cannot make offers to student trainees prior to notification day on 2/10/25.

Thus, the most essential criteria to be a member of the PTC and having your training listed on the PTC website site is that you abide by the application deadline & notification process (e.g., no application deadline before mid-December, and no offering of training positions until the designated notification day).

Training sites that do not abide by this agreement may be removed from the PTC website.

Several training sites have provided updated information about their training opportunities for AY2025-2026 as of Friday 10/18/24. When you click on "Practicum Training Info" you can tell if it is updated because the top of the form should say "Prac Site Info Form AY 2025-2026".

Training sites continue to provide updated information about their practicum opportunities and will be updated over the coming weeks. A site that has not updated their Google form may still be seeking applicants, so if you are uncertain about whether they are accepting applications, please reach out directly to that training site.

Sites listed here may make changes to their training programs and may not inform the PTC of those changes (e.g., changes in training site name, changes in clinical director, etc.) including not being able to take on trainees for the upcoming training year. Keep in mind that training sites may not have updated their information with the PTC. We are working to update all sites, so check the website regularly for possible updates.

Unfortunately, we are not able to currently alphabetize all listings; please be certain to scroll through all listings to the end of the website to ensure you see each potential training site.

If you have questions about whether or not a training site is seeking applicants, please contact directly site coordinators via the listed email for more detailed site information (e.g., brochures, application directions, practicum details, and confirming they are seeking applicants for their training program).

If you believe that a training site listed here is not abiding by the PTC guidelines related to application deadline (having a deadline before mid-December up until 1/6/25 is acceptable) or notification process (offering you a position prior to the 2/10/25 notification day), please email massptc@gmail.com and provide information about your experience so that we may address this violation of the PTC guidelines.

Welcome to the Massachusetts Practicum Training Collaborative!

This listing is intended to distribute information to students about clinical training sites in the Boston area and surrounds. It aims to assist students in locating sites and learning about available training positions. Students will still need to check with their academic programs before applying to sites to determine if there are restrictions on the training sites to which they can apply.

Many additional training sites have committed to using the PTC guidelines, but have not yet listed themselves on the website. If you don't see the site you are interested in, please contact them directly to learn about their application process and determine if they are adhering to the PTC guidelines, and contact your academic program training coordinator as well.

DOCTORAL STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE:

During the AY24-25 year, the PTC is working to update the website by mid-October. However, please keep in mind that some training sites do not provide updated information until later in the year, and some training sites develop training opportunities later in the year. The PTC website will be updated regularly up until the January 6, 2025 application deadline. Please check the website often, as sites will be updating their information and new sites will be joining the PTC as the fall semester continues.

For many of the practicum training site listings on the website, you will see a hyperlink title "Practicum Training Info" - this is a Google form that will have the most current information about training sites seeking practicum trainees for AY25-26 training opportunities.

Policies

Dear Training Colleagues,

As you may know, for the past several years, the Training Committee (TC) of the MPA has been developing the Practicum Training Collaborative among doctoral programs and training sites in Massachusetts and surrounding states.

The impetus for a Practicum Training Collaborative (PTC) came from students, doctoral programs and training sites, who voiced concerns about the problematic practices they had experienced and desired a system that was more organized, structured, and fair.

In response, the TC gathered information in a variety of ways, including dinner meetings among representatives of academic programs and training sites together, and separately; through surveys and other feedback; from the MPA general and Training Forum list serves and from consultation with a similar collaborative in greater New York City. We also ran a pilot program during the 2015-16 training year and gathered input from participants on their experiences Throughout, the TC and a sub-group working on the PTC, discussed the information we received and the various pros and cons of different approaches.

We now present what we believe is the best way to move forward. Although there are still details to be worked out, a number of basic ideas have emerged.

Students, academic programs and training sites want an organized collaborative system.
A transparent process and open flow of information are necessary.
A collaboration requires good will and good faith practices; however, rules and regulations and a system of accountability are also required for success.
The PTC may not be right for all programs or sites, who may choose to join or not.
Further, programs and sites may not choose to join at present and may do so in the future. They may also choose to leave the PTC if this no longer meets their needs.
A website will be useful to inform participants about the PTC, its practices, and the different options for practicum training.
Compromise will be necessary. For example, there are a variety of opinions as to what the "best" or most convenient timeline for interviewing and selecting students will be.

The MPA Training Committee will

Create and maintain a central website with PTC procedures at www.massptc.org.
Encourage training sites to advertise their training spots on the website
Reach out to training sites to disseminate these guidelines to all relevant sites

Doctoral programs are asked to

Reach out to sites they have worked with before and ask them to participate
Ask students where they want to apply for next year and reach out to those sites to ask them to participate in the PTC
Consider discouraging their students from applying to non-participating sites
Consider requiring students to apply only to participating sites
Ask their training sites to use the central website at www.massptc.org.
Clarify with training sites which students are being placed into reserved spots (and not applying elsewhere) and which students are applying for competitive training spots and thus competing with other students (the PTC applies only to competitive spots)
Provide support to students who are applying, e.g., lists of current and recent placements so students can see where students have trained before, meetings or email groups where students can exchange information, assistance with CV and applications, etc.
Approve practicum sites for each student in advance
Help students consider the pros and cons of various sites, to help them get ready for the notification day so that each student can quickly accept an offer without having to check back with faculty
Designate a faculty member such as a Director of Clinical Training or Practicum Coordinator to be available on the notification day to help students navigate decision making quickly if needed
Communicate to their students that they are asked to follow the guidelines (below)
Remind students that there is no such thing as a perfect practicum site
We want to remind doctoral program faculty members that the proposed guidelines do not apply to training spots such as a faculty member's research study, to "in-house training clinics" maintained by the doctoral program, or to students who are being placed at a site and not applying elsewhere.

Training sites are asked to

Use the PTC guidelines if interviewing multiple students or even a single student who is applying to multiple sites (who will therefore benefit from receiving all offers on one day)
Create a profile on the central website at www.massptc.org.
Confirm with students when they receive an application, provide several options for interview dates, and tell students as early as possible if they will not be receiving an invitation to interview
Set your application deadline no earlier than Monday January 10th, 2022, with applications preferred starting in mid-December
Use the Monday, Feb. 12th, 2024 notification date: Inform all students of offer, waitlist status, or rejection between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM EST.
Ask students to confirm by email that they received the offer right away
Remember that there is no perfect trainee and hold "rankings" lightly
Notify via email all students they interviewed as soon as they have filled all training spots
Participating sites are encouraged to respond to students asking about their status and tell them where they stand if the student has a bona fide early offer in hand (in writing/email) from a non-participating site.

Students are asked to

Work closely with faculty to get approval for each site applied to upfront
Discuss pros and cons of each site with faculty ahead of notification day
Confirm that they received the offer right away
Hold only one offer at a time and release back additional offers right away
Confirm whether they will accept, release, or hold an offer within 20 minutes of the email being received, and understand that after 20 minutes the site is free to make offers to other candidates.
Remember that there is no perfect training site
Notify all other sites they interviewed at as soon as they have accepted an offer

Site Notification Day: Monday Feb 10, 2025

Sites will inform (by phone and/or email) all students they interviewed whether they are getting an offer, are on the wait-list, or are no longer under consideration, between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, Eastern Standard Time.
If a site attempts to make an offer to an applicant by phone but does not reach the applicant (consequently leaving a voice message), the site should immediately send the applicant an email with the offer.
Students will confirm whether they will accept, release, or hold an offer within 20 minutes of the email being sent.
If a site does not receive the above confirmation of receiving the offer from a candidate within 20 minutes of the email being sent, it is free to make offers to other candidates.
Students are allowed to hold only ONE offer at any one time. The maximum amount of time a student can hold an offer is 2 hours from when the offer was verbally communicated by phone or emailed.
Sites will go down their lists until they have filled all their spots.
Once a student has accepted an offer, they will immediately (within 5 minutes) inform all other sites where they interviewed that they have accepted an offer elsewhere.
Once a site has filled all of its training slots, it will immediately (within 5 minutes) inform all other students interviewed that all training spots are full.
Sites are encouraged to contact doctoral programs directly to share that they still have open spots. The Training Forum list serve is also available for such communications.
Doctoral programs will continue to support students still looking for placements.
